New Brighton is in the news yet again! This time for removing another Commissioner. See the article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press today. At least four other Commissioners have also been removed over the last four years for allegedly disagreeing with the Council. Yet Commissioners who have made disparaging remarks about former Council Member Gina Bauman remain in their good graces. Don’t let anyone tell you that City Councils are non-partisan offices because they are anything but. A Planning Commissioner (a friend of a Council Member) who showed up for 2 or 3 meetings back in 2015 was publicly thanked for serving when he “offered his resignation”. The public was led to believe he was on vacation or ill when he never showed up for meetings. He was actually in jail for the Columbia Heights child care fraud scandal.
Applications are currently being taken for the various commissions. It’s a volunteer appointment and to do a good job does take time and effort. Decide whether you would like to be publicly humiliated before you apply.

Clearly dissent will not be tolerated by this council. So much for commission members being able to offer ideas from a different perspective than the council majority. Highly politically active commissioners who are in lock step with the majority remain their positions year after year.
The current city government is drunk with power and needs to be reigned in.
