NB Council kicks another Commissioner to the Curb

New Brighton is in the news yet again!  This time for removing another Commissioner.  See the article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press today.  At least four other Commissioners have also been removed over the last four years for allegedly disagreeing with the Council.  Yet Commissioners who have made disparaging remarks about former Council Member Gina Bauman remain in their good graces.  Don’t let anyone tell you that City Councils are non-partisan offices because they are anything but.  A Planning Commissioner (a friend of a Council Member) who showed up for 2 or 3 meetings back in 2015 was publicly thanked for serving when he “offered his resignation”.  The public was led to believe he was on vacation or ill when he never showed up for meetings.  He was actually in jail for the Columbia Heights child care fraud scandal.

Applications are currently being taken for the various commissions.  It’s a volunteer appointment and to do a good job does take time and effort.  Decide whether you would like to be publicly humiliated before you apply.

Another New Brighton Election Year Change Attempt Plus Term Extensions for All

Another New Brighton Election Year Change Attempt Plus Term Extensions for All

On December 12, 2017, a month after the 2017 municipal election, the former New Brighton City Council (Mary Burg, Paul Jacobsen, Brian Strub and Val Johnson) passed an ordinance by a 4-1 vote (Gina Bauman being the dissenter) changing the election for city officials to even years.  The ordinance cancelled the 2019 city election which results in an extra year being added to each of the current members’ terms.  Since the change was made after the November election, voters did not have the opportunity to know they were voting for a 3-year term for Mayor or a 5-year term for each Council Member. The addition to each of their terms three years prior to the election is dishonest and self-serving and voters once again must protect their rights.

The ordinance cited Minnesota Statutes 205.07 which allows the Council to make the election year change by Ordinance.  However, the Statute also indicates the need to hold an initial election to provide for an orderly transition to the even year election plan. The Statute does not address cancelling a scheduled election so thus the reason for the ballot question Petition.

Gina Bauman and Susan Erickson have prepared a Ballot Question Petition which you may sign that will put the question on the 2018 ballot.  Voters will then be able to decide whether the city should be required to hold the 2019 election.  This would allow voters to be informed of the election year change and the shortening or lengthening of terms prior to the 2019 city election. That way voters know who and what terms they are voting for and candidates will have a year to campaign before the 2019 election.

If you wish to sign the petition or want to help circulate the petition for signature by your friends or neighbors, please contact Gina Bauman or Susan Erickson via the contacts page above and we will deliver to you.

2019 New Brighton City Election

2019 New Brighton City Election

The 2019 municipal election has been canceled by a 4-1 vote of the previous Council.

A Petition to put the question on the ballot in 2018 is currently being circulated to let voters decide if the scheduled 2019 city election should be held.  Putting it on the ballot will allow each voter to decide yes or no to extending the Mayor’s term to 3 years and all  Council Members’ terms to 5 years.

If you would like to sign the Petition, click on Contact Us and provide your address and we will get it to you.
